How to Replace an audi a1 Key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). 4. ECU
